The University of Alabama

Community Service and Advocacy

Many University of Alabama students engage in community service. It helps the students contribute to the improvement of the community in which they live for four years, and it also helps the students to explore different possibilities for involvement later in their lives. This freshman learning community offers a structured way to become involved in community service, to reflect on that service, and to develop the competencies to move from service to advocacy for particular community members and groups.

The courses that compose this freshman learning community are Introduction to the Fields of Social Work Practice (SW 100), Public Speaking (COM 123), Freshman Composition (English 101 or 103), and the one-hour integrative seminar (FLC 101).

The director is J.K. Terrell, a member of the faculty of the School of Social Work.
