This freshman learning community is for students interested in exploring the mysteries of the human mind. Members will take four courses in their first semester: Introduction to Psychology (PY 101); Mind and Nature (Philosophy 252); Freshman Composition (English 101 or 103); and the one-hour freshman integrative seminar (FLC 101).
In Introduction to Psychology, students learn the basics of what science tells us about how the mind works. The Mind and Nature course focuses on two philosophical questions: What is the mind's place in the natural world? And, what is the natural world's place in the mind? The FLC seminar will give you a chance to meet other students interested in the mind and brain, and to discuss issues ranging from whether machines could think to whether it is possible to really know something.
The directors of this freshman learning community are Prof. Torin Alter of the Department of Philosophy and Prof. Tom Ward of the Department of Psychology.
