The University of Alabama

Nature or Nurture?

This freshman learning community argues that the choice is not either/or, and that the human experience is shaped by both nature and nurture. This community examines two different perspectives on the interplay between nature and nurture. One perspective is that of the individual and the stages through which each individual passes in a lifetime. The other perspective is societal, a vantage point that prompts questions about the impact of race, class, and gender on the human experience. This community's concern with the individual and the society offers valuable experiences for students interested in human services professions.

The courses that compose this community are Human Development (HD 101), Introduction to Psychology (PY 101), Freshman Composition (English 101 or 103), and the one-hour integrative seminar (FLC 101).

The director of this freshman learning community is Ms. Vicki Peeples who teaches in the Department of Human Development in the College of Human Environmental Sciences.
