The University of Alabama

News of the Day

This is for students who love to keep up with what is going on all over the world. The University of Alabama participates in The New York Times College Readership program, which provides free copies of the paper throughout campus. This FLC will use The New York Times as a window on the world of today. In the process of looking at this newspaper, students become more careful and informed consumers of news, a skill that is key to responsible citizenship.

The director of this community is Dr. Bill Keller, who has worked in newspapers and has directed the Alabama Press Association. While the community may be especially valuable to students interested in communications, all students are encouraged to consider this because of its importance to good citizenship.

This community is composed of a freshman composition course (English 101 or 103), the FLC 101 seminar, and Mass Communications 101. In addition, students choose a course in an area of their interest and will tie in coverage from The Times connected to that area (for example, political science, arts, science, and international relations).
